The History of DDL Pumps

With over 100 years design and manufacturing experience, the history of Dawson Downie Lamont offers a fascinating insight into our engineering heritage.

Originally known as Dawson & Downie, the company was founded in 1905 in a small facility north of Glasgow by two families headed by Alexander Dawson and William Downie and as manufacturers of reciprocating pumps they supplied shipyards on the River Clyde.

In 1906 the company moved to larger premises in Elgin Street in Whitecrook, Clydebank and during the 1930's diversified into the design and manufacture of reciprocating pumps for the oil industry. It also manufactured munitions during both world wars using a predominately female workforce. The company owned its own foundry and pattern shop and during during the UK shipbuilding heyday in the 1950s and '60s it employed around 500 people in Clydebank.

Ownership remained within the two founders' families until 1985 when the company was bought by Warwick Engineering Investments and amalgamated with Thomas Lamont of Paisley to form Dawson Downie Lamont. In 1994 Dawson Downie Lamont moved from Clydebank to its new facility based in Glenrothes, Fife under the ownership of the BI Group.

The firm continues in business as manufacturers of reciprocating pumps for the oil and gas, petrochemical and marine industries worldwide. DDL is now part of FTV Proclad (UK) Ltd which is owned by Proclad International, one of the worlds market leaders in the engineering service sector supplying the oil industry.

Today, DDL are one of only a few companies worldwide that specialise in the manufacture of Steam/Gas Driven Reciprocating pumps.

Our specialist range of reciprocating pumps are designed, manufactured and tested in accordance with API 674 and the Hydraulic Institute Standards. Designs can be custom built to suit individual customer specification and material requirements.

Our product range includes high pressure Triplex Plunger pumps for high efficiency, high pressure applications and Double Acting Piston pumps for high volume, medium pressure duties.
